Dental Treatments
Under general anaesthesia

Although most dental procedures are carried out under local anaesthesia, there are other options that help make the process more comfortable for patients when either:

– The dental treatment causes them a high level of anxiety,

– Or the duration or complexity of the procedure justifies other techniques that make the professional’s work easier and the process easier for the patient.

For this reason, at Dr. Tomás Hernán’s Dental Clinic we offer the option of performing procedures under general anaesthesia or sedation in a hospital setting for patients who need it. Dental treatments under general anaesthesia are a very suitable option in certain situations or for certain types of patients, as they make dental treatment comfortable and safe.

What is the difference between local anaesthesia, general anaesthesia and sedation?

First of all, we must distinguish between:

Local anaesthesia. This is a technique used to prevent the patient from feeling pain in a specific area of the mouth during treatment. It is the technique we normally use to carry out procedures at the Dental Clinic.

General anaesthesia. This involves administering drugs intravenously, which causes a temporary loss of consciousness in the patient during the treatment. This type of anaesthesia is used in complex surgical procedures to prevent pain and anxiety. This technique must be performed in a hospital setting to ensure patient safety.

Sedation. In this case, the anaesthetist administers sedative drugs by inhalation (nitrous oxide), ingestion (tablet) or intravenous injection. There are different sedatives that induce moderate or deep sedation, depending on the patient’s circumstances. In addition, sedatives can be administered before or during dental treatments.

Which dental treatments under
general anaesthesia do we most frequently perform?

Will I leave the operating theatre with my teeth in place?

Depending on each case, there is the option of making prostheses that are placed immediately (either on the mucosa or on the implants placed during surgery).

Our philosophy is to make patients’ treatments easier (as far as possible); therefore, if possible, you will always have a prosthesis after the procedure.

What are the advantages of having these treatments under general anaesthesia?

The patient experiences lower levels of anxiety about the procedure.

The professional performs the technique in an ideal environment.

Where are these dental procedures under general anaesthesia performed?

For greater patient safety, all these treatments are performed in a hospital setting (Ruber Internacional Hospital), where we have a fully equipped operating theatre and the collaboration of our anaesthetist. Likewise, we have a nursing team and assistants who work together to ensure all the necessary resources for each surgery.

Who will be my anaesthetist before, during and after the procedure?

Among Dr. Tomás Hernán’s collaborating medical team is Dr. David Callejo Crespo: physician and specialist in Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Management.

Both worked together for years at Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital, having performed a large number of surgeries together, resulting in perfect coordination between both specialties for the benefit of the patient.

Who will be my anaesthetist before, during and after the procedure?

On the one hand, all dental tests will be required (as if it were a procedure with local anaesthesia):

  • You must attend an initial appointment where a complete medical history will be taken and the necessary additional tests (generally radiological: panoramic X-ray and dental CBCT) will be performed.
  • It may be necessary to take prior records (photographs, intraoral scans, etc.) in order to prepare temporary or definitive prostheses.

On the other hand, you will need to undergo a preoperative assessment:

  • In the case of a healthy patient (ASA I), this will consist of basic blood tests (complete blood count, biochemistry and coagulation).
  • A pre-anaesthetic consultation carried out by Dr. David Callejo Crespo to assess you prior to the procedure.

What will the day of the procedure be like?

Our Patient Care team will coordinate everything to make it as easy as possible for you. We offer the option of arranging a pick-up and transfer service to your home if you wish.

You must fast for eight (8) hours before the indicated start time of the procedure. Your last meal should be light (no fats or alcohol). You must also avoid tobacco.

You must come without nail polish or creams (face or body) applied on the day of the procedure.

Remember not to wear metal objects and to dress in comfortable clothing and footwear.

It is essential that you bring a valid national identity document (DNI) or passport.

If possible, it is advisable to be accompanied by someone you trust. You must not drive any type of vehicle in the hours following surgery.

You will go to Ruber Internacional Hospital, located at Juan Bravo 49 in Madrid, notifying Admissions of your arrival so that you can be taken to your room.

When the surgical and anaesthetic team is ready, you will be taken to the operating theatre, where the scheduled procedure will be performed under general anaesthesia.

Afterwards, you will be transferred to the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU), where your progress will be monitored until you can be taken back to your room or to the Day Hospital, where it will be confirmed that you tolerate liquids and solids so that you can be discharged home.

What follow-up will be carried out after my procedure?

Our Patient Care team will contact you the day after the procedure to check on how you are doing.

You will have a contact mobile phone number at all times to address any questions.

The week after the procedure, Dr. Tomás Hernán will see you in clinic to ensure your recovery is progressing properly.
