Pediatric dentistry

Pediatric Dentistry is a branch of Dentistry that cares for and treats different oral diseases from the earliest childhood until the end of growth.

The purpose of Pediatric Dentistry is to prevent children from suffering from more serious problems in adulthood. During their childhood, parents or guardians, with the help of the dentist, are responsible for transmitting correct hygiene habits to the child to ensure a healthy oral state in the future.

Frequent questions about

Pediatric dentistry

When should I take my child to the dentist?

We recommend going to our dental clinic in Carabanchel when the child reaches the first year of life. In the children’s first dental check-up, Dr. Tomás Hernán will check the growth of the maxilla and mandible, the correct eruption of the teeth and will rule out the presence of pathologies such as caries.

They will also receive information on how to ensure that their children acquire proper oral health, we will resolve any possible doubts about hygiene and tooth brushing, as well as issues related to certain practices that may be detrimental to the correct oral development of the child.

The stage from 0 to 3 years is considered preventive. If there are no problems, an annual visit is recommended. However, from the age of 5, during the replacement period, it is advisable to check every 6 months.

What are the pediatric dentistry treatments?

– Groove and fissure sealants. In order to protect children from caries, this method is used which fills the fissures on the surface of the teeth to prevent caries.

– Pulpectomy. Pulpectomy is a treatment similar to endodontics that is performed in adults, but with the difference that the caries affects a milk tooth.

– Obturation. Also known as filling, it is another technique that is used for the treatment of cavities. Untreated cavities can cause, in addition to discomfort in the child, serious oral problems in the future.

– Application of fluoride. This method is carried out to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent caries.

– Orthodontics. This treatment is performed to correct alterations or abnormalities in bone or dental development that may exist in the child’s oral cavity.

What are the most frequent problems in children?

In these early stages we must pay special attention to:

Dental caries: it is the most frequent chronic disease in childhood. This infectious pathology is caused by the high consumption of sugars. It has serious repercussions on the child’s health, among which are: intense pain, infections and emergency visits. The reasons are usually related to poor oral hygiene, breastfeeding or bottle feeding, and frequent carbohydrate intake.

Dental trauma: Blows and accidents are very common at these ages and constitute one of the most unpleasant experiences for the child and their parents. There are different types of dental injuries, some of which could affect the formation of permanent teeth. We recommend that you go immediately to our dental clinic in Carabanchel so that Dr. Tomás Hernán examines the patient and applies the most appropriate treatment.

Malocclusions: In our dental clinic we perform orthodontic treatment in Carabanchel, which corrects bite problems such as: overbite, crossbite, inverted bite, open bite, midline deviation… and other problems such as the presence of gaps or crowding. In general, in children, interceptive orthodontic treatment is started to avoid and prevent major problems. This orthodontic treatment is performed when there are still temporary or milk teeth in the mouth and corrects bad habits such as atypical swallowing or finger sucking.
